MAISA Reading Workshop

Reading workshop is a format in which students participate in a short reading lesson and then apply the information they learned to the text they are currently reading. The teacher monitors the students' reading through small group or individual conferences and diagnostic reading assessments. Reading instruction and practice may take place in whole-group, small-group or one-on-one. Students will have opportunities to read and respond to their self-selected books and to teacher-selected texts. In addition to reading workshop, students will be engaging in extensive reading and responding across all content areas.

"Just Right" Reading Material

How can you check to see if a text is "just right?" Here's a quick check: listen to your child read aloud a page or two. If it sounds smooth with only an occasional error, then it is probably "just right." Also, your child should be able to discuss what was read. Children can often read slightly more difficult text if the book about a subject with which the student is familiar.

Accelerated Reader

Students read books and then take computerized tests over what they’ve read. Students receive points based upon the percentage correct and the level of difficulty of the book. Various prizes are awarded as incentives for achieving certain point levels. Since the program is designed to accelerate the students’ reading, I highly encourage students to read books that are at an appropriate reading level. For the books that are above your child’s reading level, you may wish to read them aloud. Reading aloud builds listening comprehension, vocabulary, and knowledge of various text structures.
